I just did a Fedora reboot after a kernel upgrade, and when I try to start Windows in Virtual Box, I get this error:
************************************************************
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)
The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver is either not loaded or not set up correctly. Please try setting it up again by executing ‘/sbin/vboxconfig’ as root.
If your system has EFI Secure Boot enabled you may also need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them. Please see your Linux system’s documentation for more information.
where: suplibOsInit what: 3 VERR_VM_DRIVER_NOT_INSTALLED (-1908) – The support driver is not installed. On linux, open returned ENOENT.

When I run /sbin/vboxconfig, I get:
******************************************************************
vboxdrv.sh: Stopping VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Starting VirtualBox services.
vboxdrv.sh: Building VirtualBox kernel modules.
vboxdrv.sh: failed: Look at /var/log/vbox-setup.log to find out what went wrong.
There were problems setting up VirtualBox. To re-start the set-up process, run /sbin/vboxconfig as root. If your system is using EFI Secure Boot you may need to sign the kernel modules (vboxdrv, vboxnetflt, vboxnetadp, vboxpci) before you can load them. Please see your Linux system’s documentation for more information.

Here’s the log:

Now what?
[Noon update]
So I followed the instructions here, including the reboot, and still no joy. Now the error log is (click on “continue reading if you want to see it):
[Update a while later]
OK, it was the new kernel. I reverted to the previous one and it’s fine. I wonder if I should report this to Oracle, or Fedora, or both?
[Update a while later]
OK, I updated to the new version of VirtualBox, and it now works with the new kernel. I guess VB doesn’t automatically update when I do a general update. I should probably add the repository for it.

Go back and check the Virtual Box documentation to see what versions of Fedora it supports. I suspect you have run out ahead of it.
I haven’t updated the Fedora version, just the kernel. It was working fine until the reboot.
Kernel versions I mean. Which is usually tied (but not always) to a Fedora version. Your new kernel either has moved something key or is missing a component that VirtualBox needs or expected to be set a certain way. That’s why IT depts. in Fortune 100s do not deploy Windows updates until internally vetted with all their mission critical apps.
You have two options. Search the web for a solution or back out to the previous kernel rev. Which is why having a backup root disk is always handy.
You’re going to set a new personal record for post length on WordPress you keep pasting build error logs here. NP complete much? You fix this and Oracle probably would appreciate an email.
How ’bout buying another disk and installing the version of Fedora and kernel that worked in the past and work from there?
I’m almost at the point of removing and reinstalling from scratch. I don’t think it’s the disk, though.
No I didn’t mean to imply it was the disk. Another disk will allow you to install an older version of kernel w/o disturbing what you have. But whatever. Do what you want.
Maybe there’s a way to roll back the kernel, without having to do a complete install.
If this had been a VM’s guest OS you updated, yes. Had you taken a snapshot first you could just roll back to the snapshot. A mouse click. But nooo. You did the host…. No backup? ahem…
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWCA7xErX08
OK, it was the new kernel. I reverted to the previous one and it’s fine. I wonder if I should report this to Oracle, or Fedora, or both?
Oracle, then Fedora. I suspect Fedora/RedHat could care less. Oracle OTOH….
Also as I mentioned previously check the web. There may be an answer there waiting for you….
What I found was this. It was the 5.8 kernel that broke it. I just upgraded to the latest version, but I haven’t tried going back to the 5.8 with it.
While we’re on the subject of VirtualBox. I noticed that after I “upgraded” from 6.0. to 6.1.12 r139181 (Qt5.6.2) if I have the screen enlarged so that it takes up the entire display, sometimes when I reboot the Guest OS into Ubuntu the desktop refuses to appear until I shrink it back into a Window and then re-expand (HOST+F). This did not happen with the older version of VB. FWIW and YMMV.
Well you inspired me to update my version of VirtualBox as well. So I did. No noticeable improvement for me running an ancient kernel. Bug mentioned above remains. Meh.
On Debian based systems, typically the software updates normally handle VB updates as well. Typically the stable VB versions are not the latest and greatest that you get pushed on you if using Win10 as a host. But at least the Linux kernels and VB tend to be consistent. I haven’t had a failure to update VB kernel modules for new Linux kernels for several years (I just had an Ubuntu kernel update a couple of days ago), so my caged Win10 VM remains happy. It seems that in the Red Hat world, things may not be quite so coordinated. It is also likely that life is simpler if one sticks with the prepackaged versions, rather that using a bleeding edged build from source code.
