Dying with coronavirus does not necessarily imply dying from it.

I’m almost at the point where I’m ready to believe that the Chinese Flu is little more than another form of the common cold and these people are dying from other diseases but just happen to be infected at the time.
Almost…
It’s pretty serious but it is really hard to gauge how serious because our media are so horrible. Pretty soon they are going to make the transition from claiming millions will die to it was no big deal and Trump overreacted because the lower than predicted deaths makes Trump look good.
Rush made this point back in March, but it is difficult to believe the left is taking the virus seriously when they constantly work on ways to make it political. I understand some politics, such as Biden boasting he could handle it better. But blaming Trump for deaths including involuntary manslaughter, opening Congressional investigations in response during the response, and the Department of HHS IG sending a report to the media before the Department Secretary; these things suggest this is more of a silly game being played for only political reasons.
Except this game is destroying the economy. That’s not to say some of the efforts made weren’t necessary, because this seems to be a bad disease. Even as the numbers start trending to a count of about 50,000; that’s 50,000 on top of the normal influenza season and with drastic measures in place. Simply doubling that assuming no measures in place seems reasonable, and 100,000 is, as Biden might say, a BFD. Yet discussions of more months of shutdown is just idiots that don’t care at all about the impact to our economy, the health of people related to our economy, and individuals that should never be taken seriously about any subject in the future.
The government is playing pretty fast and loose with the numbers and the process. A simple search for “coroner form cause of death” shows that the established procedure is to identify all of the contributing factors in chronological order, and the last/oldest factor is what is to be identified as the cause of death. For example:
Line 1: Pulmonary embolism – only minutes prior to time of death
Line 2: Congestive heart failure – 4 days prior to time of death
Line 3: Acute myocardial infarction – 7 days prior to time of death
Line 4: Chronic heart disease – 4 years prior to time of death
In this example, cause of death would be listed as chronic heart disease. Similarly, COVID-19 as the most recent diagnosis would appear at line 1. If there were no other diagnoses then the coronavirus would be listed as the cause, but my belief is that overwhelmingly with these deaths the virus was able to overwhelm them because other factors had weakened the immune system.
The number I’m interested in is the “excessive deaths” number. E.g. total deaths in NYC, the 1st week of April 2020 compared to the same week in 2019, 2018, 2017, etc. That is a much more straightforward statistic to gather and can be compared more easily with previous years, and is much more meaningful IMHO.

Meanwhile the PRC is almost certainly doing the opposite, given their laughable claim of “zero new cases and no deaths”.
