Starliner

Boeing took a $400M charge in the fourth quarter last year to pay for an uncrewed reflight. Today they announced that they’re going to do it, probably in the fall. Unless something goes very wrong, SpaceX is almost certain to be first. I suspect that the Boeing board is regretting taking on the contract now.

  1. In the long term, they are guaranteed contracts from NASA even if they cost more and Starliner allows them to hedge against SLS getting cancelled.

  2. You say the board probably regrets the contract. I say it takes serious talent to lose money on 5 billion dollars for developing an upscale Gemini.

  3. So it looks like Dragon DM-2 [crew 2] in mid- to late May, with a 2 – 3 month mission, end date to be 30 days before the anticipated launch of Dragon USCV-1 [crew 4], which would be August/September, lasting for 6 months. And somewhere in there Dragon CRS-21 gets to fly. Assuming Starliner OFT-2 works, I’d guess CFT will fly around March 2021. If its for 3 months, then Dragon USCV-2 could reset the USOS crew rotation to the originally anticipated June/Dec flights. Which suggests Starline-1 “Calypso’ might not fly until the end of next year.
