Technology might be a coping mechanism rather than the cause. They should look at how people used to meet and compare to how they meet now. It will be different from culture to culture but I suspect they would find that many of the social institutions that used to facilitate mating don’t exist any more or are degraded. The causes for this could include technology but probably are driven largely by other things, like concerted efforts to destroy these institutions or in the case of Japan, a sudden rapid change forced on them in how their society operates.
I’m guessing there’ll be a lot more sex going on once we have Cherry-2000 sex-bots and VR waifus. And a lot more kids once we have artificial wombs.
