Why would government allow citizens to make decisions? Excellent question for a “conservative” to ask.
Our founding fathers had the right idea, rather than constraining the rabble, constrain the ruling class. Thanks Mr Will for showing us their timeless wisdom.
The reason for the referendum is simple: the Remainers didn’t think they could lose.
They wanted to settle EU membership once and for all, so anyone who complained in the future could be told ‘we had a referendum and voted to stay in, so hard cheese.’
And then they lost.
Which is why we’re now faced with the ludicrous spectacle of a country whose people want to get out of the EU run by a government that desperately wants to stay in it and is doing everything in its power to avoid giving people what they want.
The English have deposed kings for less.
Oh, it’s also worth noting that the government lied to the British people about the EEC referendum; they knew the plan was to create a ‘United States of Europe’, but denied it.
According to Ted Heath, the Prime Minister: “There are some in this country who fear that in going into Europe we shall in some way sacrifice independence and sovereignty. These fears, I need hardly say, are completely unjustified.”
He was, of course, one of the greatest traitors in the history of Britain. Particularly if the stories about him being a Nazi agent in WWII are true.
Now, they want an EU army and our idiot prestige media just bob their heads in agreement. No one need give up sovereignty in order to have free trade or free passage of people.
Great Britain never had free passage of people. They are not a Schengen treaty signatory nation.
Pat Condell notes the eerie similarity in the way the media treats Brexit voters and Trump voters. Why, it’s almost as if the elites in both countries are on the same page.
Oops, my mistake. Condell never mentions Trump once in that video, but you can mentally substitute “Trump” for “Brexit” throughout, and it works perfectly.
Had dinner in London with friends a couple years ago, in which I pointed out that Brexit and Trump were both a result of normal people getting fed up with being shat upon by mediocre people who thought themselves our betters, simply because they were credentialed and were in positions of power.
And how did that statement go over with them, Rand?
They didn’t disagree. They’re libertarians (Perry DeHavilland and Adriana Lukas).
I just finished two readings of your neighbor’s book on that subject.
Then I had an experience recently with some previous coworkers that are civil servants at NASA. They are part of the “resistance”, and were upset that I wasn’t “on their team” when I pointed out that NASA being shutdown isn’t important considering SpaceX and Blue Origin are not shutdown (maybe in the sense of supporting NASA, but that is not the only interest or primary goal of those companies).
It is important because, for example, Commercial Crew hasn’t launched yet because of NASA and their stupid long winded paperwork review.
I should be clearer, the subject of normals, whom are fed up with “our betters”.
