I was wondering if anyone had been carrying. Apparently not: “The usher ran and got his gun and held the gunman at gunpoint.”
If he hadn’t had to go get it, it could have ended sooner.

From what I can find online, it isn’t illegal to carry a firearm into a religious institution except for those parts that are being used for school purposes. Many large churches operate private schools. Shootings at churches are thankfully very rare so it isn’t unreasonable for someone not to be carrying inside the building.
Attorney General Opinion on Carrying in/on Property of a Church School.
– it is a criminal offense to possess or carry weapons, including firearms, on those portions of the property of a religious institution being used for school purposes.
– The prohibition against carrying weapons applies only to those portions of the property of the religious institution being used for school purposes.
– The prohibition against carrying a firearm on the property of a religious institution applies only while the property is being used or operated by the school.
Even where i`t isn’t illegal, I imagine it is widely thought uncouth.
Indeed
I have a friend who is an FBI agent. He leaves his gun locked in his car while attending church. No one has told him do do this, he is just uncomfortable carrying in church.
