  1. Humans have been intermittently guiding cat breeding for less than 1,000 years.

Are there people who breed cats with intent? Its not like there are many tasks for them to be bred for. Their main job is companionship. Their current attributes are what people like in them as pets that require little effort to care for. There isn’t much incentive to breed them and nothing of importance to have them do.

Considering how people like different types of dogs that no longer have a working purpose, there could be a huge market for a designer cat.

  2. “[Cats] domesticated humans thousands of years ago.”

And I’m so glad their little furry asses did. 😀

  3. While cats initially served a purpose of pest control, most modern people don’t have granaries or vermin infestations. I like to call indoor cats “extremely sophisticated and successful parasites”. Think about it. We give them food, water, a comfortable place to sleep, and expensive medical care. All they have to do in return is be adorable. Pretty sweet gig if you ask me.

If a wild animal got loose in your house that was as destructive as a kitten, you’d try to kill it. But kittens get a pass because they’re cute. When my late cat Leo was a kitten, he liked to climb on the window screens. He looked like a gigantic bug up there. He tore the hell out of the screens with his claws and I had to get them replaced. But it was totally worth it because it was so hilarious to watch.

  4. I think we could eventually breed cats to inspect the underside of cars. I’m not sure what that would accomplish, though.
