Scientists have cured mice of Type 1 with gene therapy. Apparently it will work for Type 2 as well, though a lot of that is caused by following terrible nutrition advice.

“Apparently it will work for Type 2 as well,…”
It will be working only on a secondary effect of Type 2 diabetes. While Type 2 diabetes is caused by the insulin receptors in the body’s cells being blocked, the Beta Cells of the Islets of Langerhans inside the pancreas crank out ever more insulin to attempt to bring down the blood glucose levels. This has the same results as revving an automobile’s engine at its highest possible speed continually without stop.
Eventually the Beta cells in the Islets wear out, and die or shut down, so that insulin production drops and/or quits. That is when Type 2 diabetics have to begin injecting insulin. Replacing them with pancreatic cells “re-assigned” genetically will alleviate the “burnout” for some years. It will *not* however, cure the Type 2 diabetes itself. The cells of the body must still be maintained, most likely by the same drugs now used to clear blocked insulin receptor sites, with all their own risks.
The diet mention is probably correct on an epidemiological level, but for those already Type 2 diabetics with burnt out Beta cells, the genetic procedure would still be enormously helpful.
