    1. It isn’t that the civil service is naturally leftist – though it probably is – but that it is pro-survival. Careerist. Like anyone else, they want to protect their jobs, so they tend to support politicians and policies that want to add to the bureaucracy.

      As many have said, it is the US Civil Service that will do the most harm to President Trump and his policies. They can always say that they are following the law, they can always say that the executive order is illegal, and they can always say that they are, in fact, following the policy or order, even when doing exactly the opposite. Trump may well fire some of them – you go!, Sir! – but history shows that, eventually, most of them will be reinstated, with back pay.

      In the end, the only way to discipline the service is to make major budget cuts – that is, massive layoffs, instead of fired for cause – but that would require both Republican and Democrat congressional types to get totally behind it. That also seems unlikely.

      Just saying what I think. No happier about it than you are.

  5. It looks like some in the GOP are beginning to grow a pair. It may be that the Dems will rue the day they let Harry Reid destroy them:

    Senate Republicans pushed through a pair of President Trump’s Cabinet nominees Wednesday, upending standard committee rules to circumvent a Democratic boycott.

    The Senate Finance Committee advanced a pair of Trump’s nominees with only Republican members present — Steven Mnuchin to head the Treasury Department, and Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.) as secretary of Health and Human Services.

    By unanimous consent, the Republicans gathered in the hearing room agreed to change the committee’s standing rules, which normally require at least one member of each party to be in attendance for committee work to proceed.
