  1. I saw it last night and it was a VERY good movie that made you think and in some ways challenged your view of how the world works…

    A+ IMHO

    1. I liked it a lot. It addresses two subjects (alien encounters and another that I won’t spoil) that are both hard to do well on film, and I think it succeeds. Amy Adams is great.

      1. I have never seen anything that Amy Adams has done that is not great. She is both easy on the eyes, and a great actress, even as she ages. I think she’ll be another Meryl Streep.

        1. Yeah I agree about Amy Adams. Great actress.

IT does seem that the big names are doing Marvel Comix and Sci-Fi these days. To see actors of the caliber of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, and Mads Mikkelson doing Dr Strange (horrid movie but then I don’t like sorcery) is interesting.

          1. Somebody recently recommended Dr. Strange to me but didn’t mention it was a fantasy flick. I’m not a fan, but can forgive if they have a good story. What makes it horrid?

            Ken,

Well I don’t like sorcerer movies….Magic movies. So it’s a personal taste thing – you make like it fine.

I will say Cumberbatch was very very good as he carried off the American Accent and American Swagger very well.

  2. I read the short story – well executed and deep, thoughtful philosophy.

I was surprised The Martian got made as a big-budget motion picture; I’m shocked this did (and probably only because The Martian was a hit?).

    1. As I commented on twitter, the short story involves Lagrangian mechanics as a plot point.

That makes this an action movie.

  3. I used to read so much that it was very rare I’d find a movie based on a book or short story that I hadn’t read first. Forest Gump (the book was aweful so I’m glad I saw the movie first) was one and this is another. It looks like hard SF which is my preference.

I used to think about language a lot when I was 16, even considering if color perception was influenced by color names (it’s a spectrum so your pure red might not be the same as mine? The choice would seem to be arbitrary other than by consensus.)

  4. Haven’t seen it, but between Amy Adams and only she being able to talk to the arrived; the trailer just looks like Man of Steel.

  5. Saw the movie this afternoon. Not bad. I thought the portrayal of the military was a little unfair. Soldiers taking it on themselves to bomb the alien ship. Really? Undisciplined rabble, not soldiers.
    3.5 stars.

  6. On reflection, I’m becoming more and more annoyed with that movie.
Not even for the sciency stuff but just as a movie. Could have cut half an hour out of it without loss.

  7. Meh. Yes, Amy Adams and Jeremy Render and Forest Whittaker are great, and it’s visually wonderful. But it’s pretentious and overwritten, and what they had for the big reveal is getting to be trite.

Aliens advanced enough to show up on Earth would have many, many non-magical things they could teach us. Why “thoughtful” SF movies need for them to be masters of the impossible is beyond me.
