You know its grim when the Obama administration is asking to cut the funding of their own program.
The administration’s request is a big cut to Orion/SLS only in comparison to what Congress passed. Last year, the administration requested $2.863 billion for exploration systems development. This year’s request of $2.860 billion is a slight decrease, after allowing for inflation. And, of course, it’s not really the adminstration’s program — Orion/SLS was forced on it by Congress.
More like worked with congress on and supported for 8 years. Obama has been so fiscally responsible in his trimming of wasteful government programs, that he helped create, that there really isn’t any room for jocularity on the subject because it is so ordinary.
It is quite out of line to even think about the humor of the situation and any such comments should be reported immediately to flag@whitehouse.gov. Why its as if people are not taking the #JourneyToMars seriously. Someone ought to do something about it.
Obama tried to kill shuttle derived heavy lift in 2010 and has consistently requested less money for it than Congress has appropriated. Obama opposed this but in the end gave in (no big surprise: as Rand would remind us, “space is not important” on the national scene). So yeah, I’d like to see Obama fight Orion/SLS in a big way, but I don’t realistically expect any president to go to the mat for a minor issue. I don’t get why your anger on this issue is directed at Obama rather than the Congressional porkers (I’m lookin’ at you, Nelson, Hutchison, Shelby, Palazzo, Smith, Brooks, et al) who created this monstrosity and shovel money at it.
