I hate op-eds like this. They’re meaningless.
I oppose "space exploration." It's a meaningless phrase. I favor space development.

I thought you preferred space settlement ?
Space settlement won’t happen without space development. They go hand in hand.
The issue in my opinion is all the implicit vertical thinking that goes with the phrase space exploration. Perhaps your next book Rand should be “Apollo Considered Harmful”. Because it set a meme for an entire generation in the US that gave NASA essentially a monopoly in nearly all things space. One that has in fact been more of an impediment than a boon in subsequent years. We are on the verge of changing the paradigm back to a more natural path. SLS not withstanding.
That’s going to be a major theme of the Kickstarter report.
What do you mean they’re meaningless? They’ve succeeded so well that I’m talking to you from the tropical surface of Titan today.
😉
But we have to explore space to find out what’s in it and what it’s made of. What makes planets go backwards during part of the year? There has to be some kind of gear arrangement out there that we just can’t see because it’s made out of crystal or something.
A gear arrangement might explain KIC 8462852 (WTF-1). Good work George.
Perhaps we can use vehicles powered by phlogiston, or set sail on the luminiferous ether…
I prefer “Space Exploitation” myself.
“Space Exploitation” is my favored term too, but it’s way too “un-PC” to see common usage.
If we’re going for PC, we should claim we’re persecuted minority migrating refugees on a mission of converting toxic waste and green energy into something useful.
I support manned space meandering. Oops thats not gender neutral – human space meandering.
