  1. Thomas Frank (the Linda Lovelace of State-fellators) once did a column attacking the Tea Party–surprise, surprise–and the arguments he used were eerily reminiscent of the arguments used by George Fitzhugh, possibly the antebellum South’s most articulate and scholarly apologist for slavery. to attack the idea of a free society.

  2. Well, the Democrats are the party of the Trail of Tears, of slavery and secession and starting a war when you lose an election and segregation and the Klu Klux Klan and city machines and progressive eugenics and “red scares” and union thuggery and fellow-travelers and betraying our allies to Socialist butchery and “moral equivalents to war” and political correctness and racial supremacists.

So there’s nothing much new here other than the Democrats and the Progressive Left finding that most people don’t care if they no longer hide what they really are.

  3. The original fire-eaters were led by Senators and Congressmen.

The most prominent leaders of the modern version proclaimed in the linked post are a history professor and a semi-retired columnist from Des Moines. Not comparable.
