  1. It’s worth noting that male adult (baptized?) Sikhs are required to carry a Kirpan, a (in practice mostly ceremonial) combat knife/sword, at all times, though in the west they tend to wear quite small blades for reasons of practicality.

    1. Their religion evolved during a time of struggle against Muslim invasion and forced conversion. This is why they are supposed to carry a weapon with them at all times.

  2. He made the good point that they were not targeted because the murderer thought they were muslim. That meme spread quick and was used to politicize the massacre in an effort to attack and delegitimize people who don’t like militant islamists. The media and their allies on the left only care about the Sikh as long as they can be used in their crusade against islamophobes.

  3. Thanks for the link.

Mike E: I believe that it isn’t all male Sikhs, but a small subset of particularly strict Sikhs. I was told that in order to get the Kirpan, you had to be vegetarian, get up early for a bath and prayers, and otherwise live a very strict life. They made it sound sort of monastic, without the whole “don’t get married” thing.

Rand: The son of the temple President is saying that the FBI told him that his father used his knife to attack and wound the shooter. It appears that he was able to drive the shooter outside where the cops shot him. It would have been nice if it hadn’t cost the President his life. I updated the post and linked the video of the son.

wodun: I think that it’s partially the Sikhs who have pointed out that they keep getting bothered because people think they are Muslim. The TV talking heads certainly jumped all over that. It’s an article of faith among leftists that Americans are total racists who are only just seconds away from massacring the poor Muslims. Never mind that in 2010 the FBI reports that in our nation of 300+ million people, there were a total of 1,552 anti-religion hate crimes of which 67% were against Jews versus 12.7% against Muslims.

It sounds like anti-religious hate crimes are both extremely rare, and mostly directed at Jews.
