I liked it as well – even though there had been lots of movies with the same basic story. I kept expecting the lead actor to walk into the waves, and end it all, like Frederick March.
There is a neat little surprise twist in the middle of the movie where the surprise itself has only a little to do with the plot at that point (trying not to spoil).
The lead was able to strike the classic 1920’s ham actor poses (there’s one on the lileks page). Though I wonder if those poses were commonly done back then or if it’s a caricature.
I recommend the movie if you like movies. Though it rates a low score on the Fighter Pilot Ready Room Movie Scale (0-10):
