OK, so I’ve got this new GUI in Fedora 15 (haven’t played much with it yet, because it’s on my laptop, and haven’t been traveling). What does it mean when there is nothing on the screen except the time in the top center, and my name in the upper right corner with a lock icon? I can move the cursor around, but I can’t unlock it. The only way out I’ve found is to ctrl-function to a terminal, log in as root, and reboot. What am I missing here?

  1. At the login screen, toward the bottom, is there an option to login using the “classic” interface? That will give you the familiar old Gnome desktop environment.

      1. The ctrl-alt-backspace key combination should forcibly restart X windows and bring up the gdm login screen, unless auto-login was configured. Or does it just bring you back to the screen you described?

  2. Do you use Fedora for your server too? I did that a couple of years ago and have regretted it since because it doesn’t (or didn’t) offer automatic upgrades.

  3. I’m on the road with a client, but I’m wondering if you’re seeing the login screen and the login prompt is off the screen because of screen resolution issues. This site describes a command xrandr (http://www.perpetualpc.net/srtd_resolution.html) that would allow you to see the screen resolution.

    Here’s why this probably won’t work: usually the parts that go off the screen is the bottom and the right, and you said your name is in the upper-right, looking like it belongs there (?). It’s the only thing I can think of to try.

    I assume clicking on the picture of the lock doesn’t do anything?
