New Theme

I may use this as the basis for a new blog theme. It obviously needs a lot of tweaking in the style sheets.

[Evening update]

Folks, if you want to complain about the new theme, do it here, not at the previous post. I don’t want to have to carry on two discussions.

And as I’ve said repeatedly, I’m just trying to move it from circa 2005 to modern times, in terms of functionality. I’ll worry about aesthetics later. Not that I don’t want suggestions on the latter, but don’t expect a response to them immediately.

For instance, I now have “Like” buttons, and “Reply” to comments. I don’t want to go back.

Also, if someone with graphic talent wants to come up with a new header graphic similar to the old one, I’d appropriate it gratefully. It doesn’t have to be the same, and I’m open to upgrades, but I’d like it to have some heritage. 980×100, please…

[Update early evening, before settling in to watch Verlander and the Tigers against the Yankees]

Yes, I do hate the blockquote style — why do you ask? It will be the second thing I tackle in the style sheets after colors.

  1. Interesting, but I’d like to see some color. The red and black color scheme reminds me of 80s New Wave bands.

    1. How about Ozzy? Reminds me of him.

      “Bark At The Moon”

      [Osbourne]

      Screams break the silence
Waking from the dead of night
      Vengence is boiling
He’s returned to kill the light
Then when he’s found who he’s looking for
Listen in awe and you’ll hear him

      Bark at the moon
      Ha ha ha ha ha…

      Years spent in torment
      Buried in a nameless grave
      Now he has risen
      Miracles would have to save
Those that the beast is looking for
Listen in awe and you’ll hear him

      Bark at the moon
Hey yeah, bark at the moon

They cursed and buried him along with shame
And thought his timeless soul had gone, gone
In empty burning hell – unholy one
But he’s returned to prove them wrong (so wrong)
      Ooh, yeah baby

      Howling in shadows
      Living in a lunar spell
      He finds his heaven
Spewing from the mouth of hell
Those that the beast is looking for
Listen in awe and you’ll hear him

      Bark at the moon
Hey yeah, bark at the moon
Hey yeah, bark at the moon
Oh Oh yeah, bark at the moon

  2. Any idea when an Amazon box will be ready? I was planning on putting in an order for a cable modem this weekend.

  3. Try this Amazon link for now. It’s a tiny url, because Rand’s blog still won’t accept links with question marks, but I generated using a link from Google’s cache of Rand’s site.

  4. the biggest problems are the color scheme (red & black is soooo 80’s) and the wolf howling at the moon is a bit distracting as a background.

  5. Oh, rats. I see Bob-1 beat me to my original and insightful observation.

Note to self: Read previous comments.

  6. It now takes about ten seconds for your blog to render enough on my browser to become scrollable. This is much slower than before.

  7. Just a random musing, but I wonder whether the tendency of wolves to howl at the moon helped set mankind on that path?

Dogs were probably the first domesticated animal, and they came from wolf stock. So early humans were paying attention to wolves for a long time.

Obviously, early humans could see the moon, but maybe the wolves howling helped focus their attention on it. I’m not aware of any primates howling at the moon.

  8. I like the wolf and the moons in the background, but I agree with those who say the red’s got to go. I think the background would go better with a light text on a dark or shaded background, but that’s just me.

  9. I was thinking that howling at the moon stood for a rather futile gesture, just as Rand’s posts are a futile regressive gestures against the progressive currents of history.

And for the literal-minded, wolves have made absolutely no progress at getting to the moon, despite all their howling.

On the other hand, a dog (fertile with wolves) did journey to outer space before humans.

But on the other hand, she died there.

But on the other hand, Rand advocates being willing to accept casualties when conquering a frontier.

But on the other hand, the dog died like a dog, a slave, yet another victim of the Soviet Empire.

But did Laika have any fun in orbit? We’ll never know.

    Hmmm.

      1. No Bob’s not that powerful. He’s just a sad progressive that really thinks Rand is the one howling at the moon.

  10. PS Hey, Dick Eagelson, we recently discussed identical twins and genetic determinism here. There are some real gems in Rand’s archives (I’m not being snide this time) including this one: “How identical are identical twins” transterrestrial dot com/?p=16272

    1. Aside from the fact that no two people have exactly the same understanding of any given word, you and Rand are likely to have quite a divergent meaning for a word that is such a fundamental aspect of your personal philosophy.

  11. Seems a bit too busy, to me. I liked the way it looked earlier today (or was it last night) with the cleaner, minimalist, look.

  12. The wolf seems a bit out of place, and I think you should restore the old layout’s header graphic. Otherwise the blog looks OK.

Do you use Firebug to edit style sheets? It’s a great time-saver.

  13. I’m going to put in a request for a “mobile” version of the site, now that I’ve started reading more and more blogs and websites on my Kindle. One of the biggest issues with using this site on a Kindle is that the Kindle is incapable of opening any link that opens a new tab or window, but the center-window style sheets make it somewhat difficult to read on a mobile device as well.

Yes, I know the link issue is Kindle’s problem, and I appreciate that you set all of your links to open in new windows/tabs, but with more people going “mobile” with iPads, Kindles, smart phones, etc, a mobile version seems to be a natural step forward.

    Just a thought…

  14. I also wanted to say that I really like the ability to “reply” to individual posts. Definitely helps the readability and makes it easier to respond directly to a specific person/post if they’re not the most recent comment.

  15. Rand? One annoying I see with the new theme is that the when you click on the categories links (as I do often to find “Space” articles) – All the articles are sorted in oldest to newest order. Which is not very helpful. The newest ones should be listed first. Can you fix that?

Also, the old “theme”/look had a mobile version, which the new one seems to lack.

    1. Also, the old “theme”/look had a mobile version, which the new one seems to lack.

It did? I was never able to track it down, although I admit I didn’t try very hard. As posted above, with all of the links set to open in new windows, the site doesn’t work on a Kindle, unless the mobile version deleted the “target” specification from all links.

If the “preview” pane could move back above the comment box, that would be keen, too…

      1. The mobile version of the old theme was at least showing for my iPhone. I don’t have a Kindle so I have never tried that.

Now my iPhone sees the “full site”. Not a huge deal, but still.

  16. What’s with the Facebook requirement for “like”? Can’t you do it without FB? I’m still not signing up.
