“Oaf named Homer raises his dysfunctional family in a town named Springfield.”
It was an episode description…
Which is pretty all-encompassing. But hilarious.

What is so disfunctional?
Homer keeps a steady job supporting his family by working at the nuclear plant. Marge stands by her “Homie” despite his oafishness. Lisa is perhaps a bit too earnest but could even be characterized as intellectually gifted. And Bart may be mischievious, but he doesn’t keep bad company and his friend Millhouse is actually a moderating influence on his behavior.
Remember that episode of Gilligan’s Island where they almost got off the island?
I read a magazine article once that sought to explain the characters of Gilligan’s Island as archetypes of the American people. It was fucking hilarious, and I think the writer was actually being serious, which made it even funnier.
And it actually made sense to me, which made it funnier still.
Jay, do you mean the one where someone came to the island then ‘forgot’ to tell anyone about the castaways or the one where they discovered a way to get off the island but Gilligan screwed it up but saved their lives?

I think that was the one with the homoerotic subtext, wasn’t it?
I might have cited this example before, but:
Some sitcom had someone reading the description for Three’s Company: “A conversation is overheard, misconstrued, and hilarity ensues”. The other person said, “Darn, I’ve seen that one”.
Rand, you must not watch Simpsons reruns very often on Verizon–that is in fact their generic Simpsons episode description when they don’t list the specific episode.
I haven’t had Verizon that long. We just switched from DirecTV recently.

Actually, I think it was based on an interview with the creator of the show.

What about The Professor? The most resourceful, entreprenureal person, evah. Gosh, there isn’t anything that guy couldn’t make out of coconuts and bamboo.
Apparently, he couldn’t make a boat.
Or glue that didn’t fail after a certain amount of time or nails that didn’t explode; hence Gilligan saving their lives.
