  1. Are there Halal Edicts against cannibalism?

I expect that there ARE and I expect many ARE about to displease Allah!

  2. I retain a bit of long term optimism. Europe had something similar happen in 1848 or so. And they aren’t too bad at the moment. I do gloss over several hundred million deaths in the meantime, but if the Middle East is facing some sort of mass die-off, then IMHO even a quixotic attempt to avoid that fate is better than deliberate self-destruction.

  3. So if something similar happens in the ME, it will only be 100-150 years of pain for the rest of us.

    That’s shorter than forever.

  4. Actually, Karl, Europe is in some of the same trouble as the Middle East. The ultra-low, extinction-level birthrates are one commonality. Absent major extensions to average human lifespan, there will be fewer native Europeans – including Russians – in 100 to 125 years than there are Germans today. Also, just like the Islamic world, Europe is, as a whole, seriously broke. In each area there are relatively strong balance sheets – e.g., Germany, Saudi Arabia – and basket cases – e.g., Greece, Egypt. Overall, neither region is a good economic bet going forward. About the only thing Europe clearly has going for it that the Middle East does not is a population that is not just itching for a nice apocalyptic fight with pretty much anyone who’s handy. The Europeans, thank goodness, seem to have largely lost their longstanding lust for each others’ blood since 1945. Things are going to get even uglier in the Islamic world than they are now. What to do? I recall the initial advice Capt. James T. Kirk once offered anent the Klingons.

  5. Why is Klang a Klingon name but Kling isn’t?

Klingon is a wonderful race name not derived from anything I can tell (well, except the obvious.)

Romulans from Rome. Andorians from a star. Andromedons from M31. Etc.
