I had heard the rumors about the Dems wanting to run Gabby Giffords for Senate, but I hadn’t heard this comment. The answer is “no, there is no capacity for shame.” Nor are there any bounds on their political opportunism.

I think Ann quotes a bit of out context. The quote from Newsweek (probably out of context itself) was:
“Let’s say that she’s 90 percent [recovered],” says Mike McNulty, Giffords’s last campaign chairman. “Well, we’ve had congressmen in Arizona who didn’t even have a brain. So, it’s not like you have to be as talented as she is to be good at it.”
If that seems like an icky comment, ok, I won’t argue, but I think Ann’s edit made it sound much more icky.
Representative Giffords suffered major brain damage at the hands of a probably insane lunatic. It’s way too soon to know for sure how much her cognitive abilities were permanently damaged by the bullet that passed through her brain.
Fortunately for those pushing her to even higher elective office, brain damage isn’t a disqualifier for serving in the Senate. Given the Senators we have, it may actually be a benefit. At least with brain damage, there’s hope for improvement in the future. Most sitting Senators are dumber than a bag of hammers and there’s no cure for that.
Please hold the outrage. She was probably going to run if this attack had never occurred. Whether she’s up to such a challenge is not yet settled.
