I didn’t realize that Obama had adopted Lang Lang as a sort of “official artist”. Sort of like Roosevelt having the Nazi’s Arno Breker as the official Presidential sculptor.
Words matter, I hear. Lyrics too, I suppose.
…and we should be surprised why?
Well, the pianist maintains that he meant no ill intent. Maybe it was meant to be a veiled insult, but what president allows the pianist to do their diplomacy for them? In any case, it’s more of that fabled competence that the Obama administration delivers day in and day out. And maybe that’s all it is.
The fact is they demonstrated what little respect they have for this administration and sent an important message back home that they would ‘get.’
I’m inclined to cut Lang Lang some slack. He’s still wet behind the ears at 28, and has been traveling the world since he was eleven. If he says nostalgia for his childhood and homeland prompted his choice of music, I believe him.
We do, however, have a desperate need for some grownups at the White House.
