Congratulations to Barnaby Wainfan (who I’ve known for over three decades, having gone to school with the woman who later became his wife), on the win in the Automotive X-Prize. Also on his becoming an adjunct professor at Michigan. One thing that the article doesn’t note, but I will, is that he also played a significant role in the design of XCOR’s Lynx.

That’s cool. I’m still waiting for him to do something more with his FacetMobile homebuilt airplane design. It looks like a fun project.
Too bad none of the winners seemed all that practical–at the end of the day, pushing volume and mass around (which is, one might claim, the whole point) costs energy, and linear increases in those factors of utility lead to at least somewhat linear increases in cost.
I really enjoy Barnaby’s column in Kitplanes. They are a great introduction and overview of many facets of aircraft design. Hopefully all the articles will be put together in one place one day.
Congrats on the Auto Xprize win.
thanks for the hat tip, Rand. As Barnaby said within minutes of meeting me, “I come with airplanes, that’s not negotiable.” Little did I know he came with cars too, although we did have Craig Breedlove in our living room and Barnaby’s fin reportedly saved his life.
larry: me too!
