I have heard that DoD is flying at least one Global Hawk (the Navy one based at Pax River) over Haiti for hi-res images as well.
Science to the rescue is a great story. Now we can see the real value of all those surveillance satellites and the mapping they’ve done has really paid off. An excellent use of our imaging satellites to be able to see what’s happening on the ground in Haiti so that the organizers of the relief effort have a better idea of where to get aid. I just hope they imaged the port (or watched BBC America News) so they can see that the offloading cranes have been damaged and know to bring offloading equipment as one of the fiurst things sent to Haiti.
