*sigh* It’s almost getting to the point where the scenario of Charlie Stross’ story “A Colder War” is beginning to look plausible — that this is all a cover for a determined effort by our government to keep us from exploring space without telling us why they want to keep us earthbound. In Stross’ story, it was because it turns out that Lovecraft’s eldritch enitities — Cthulhu, shoggoths, and all the rest — really are out there …
