What Is Science?

APS has an explanation for the warm-mongers:

Science is the systematic enterprise of gathering knowledge about the universe and organizing and condensing that knowledge into testable laws and theories.

The success and credibility of science are anchored in the willingness of scientists to:

1. Expose their ideas and results to independent testing and replication by others. This requires the open exchange of data, procedures and materials.
2. Abandon or modify previously accepted conclusions when confronted with more complete or reliable experimental or observational evidence.

Adherence to these principles provides a mechanism for self-correction that is the foundation of the credibility of science.

But, but…it’s settled! We have to save the planet!

  1. It’s pretty simple to tell the difference between science, religion, and politics.

Quantum Theory is a theory even after decades of testing and validation.
The Theory of Relativity is a theory even after almost a century of testing and validation.
The Theory of Evolution is still a theory despite generations of fossile evidence and examination.

But “Man-made global warming is settled science” and “the debate between capitalism and socialism is over.”

  2. The debate between capitalism and socialism is over. Capitalism won. Unfortunately, there are Market Deniers out there.

  3. I don’t know, I’m still waiting for someone to settle that Great French Fry Debate that Burger King started with McDonald’s back in 1997. I think you have to be a bit of a Burger King denialist to not admit that their fries are crispier than McDonald’s. Although they do both seem to contribute greatly to a my total ass-print size and emissions.

  4. I dont see uncertainty as reason to do nothing about climate change. On the contrary it is reason to act. We are conducting an uncontrolled experiment on a system we have barely begun to understand.

But if you expect me to believe the current projections as fact, you’ve got to be joking. scientists still seem to be discovering new things about climate every few months, and have no convincing empirical data on how much greenhouse gas concentrations truly drive global temperature. Bear in mind the primary driver of global temperature is the oceans.
