So far that you can’t even see it from there. A devastating analysis that I hope everyone on the Augustine panel reads. And note that this is something that the press, even the space press, rarely, if ever, talks about.

A very depressing read.
The Aldridge Commission’s fundamental flaw: commercial capabilities can cancel corrupt Congressional committee clutches.
Alliteration intended.

Why conduct these commisions in the first place when they can be completely ignored ?
Why conduct these commisions in the first place when they can be completely ignored ?
The Augustine I commission was not ignored. Dan Goldin jumped on the recommendations when he came on board. The whole mission to Planet Earth and the Mission From Planet Earth came from that commission. The problem was that when the costs of the Mission From Planet Earth continued to spiral out of control, it was chopped. We got some good remote sensing missions (Terra and Aqua are the flagships) from the mission to planet earth.
And all the commissions and all the noble and good people and all the good ideas and intentions all stop. Cold. At the second floor. The NASA middle managers will do everything in their power to prevent any movement from the status quo. Middle management is where the incompetents settle out, calcify and block up the pipes. Nothing short of total disintegration and reorganization using no one who has any prior experience at NASA will save it from its continuing downward spiral into irrelevancy as little more than a money sink, and a jobs program for people who can’t get work anywhere else. Some powerful Senators and a few Congressmen will see to it that such reorganization never occurs.
So certainly there will be nice speeches and the appearance of Augustine 2.0 being implemented while silently the middle management coral starts to entomb every page.
