One thing a lot of people don’t realize, you don’t have to eat everything you’re given, just because you bought it. At fast food places, I routinely throw away (or give away, if possible) any uneaten fries, usually half or more, and sometimes part of the sandwich. I used to try to order just what I wanted, only to be told over and over “It’s cheaper if you get the combo!” I finally gave up and just started ordering the “Number N” and sparing the poor clerks the mental difficulty of going against programming. Back when they spoke English I used to try to explain why I didn’t want more for less, but it never sank in, so I just learned to only eat my fill and dispose of the leftover. Of course there’s still the guilt leftover from my parents’ admonishments when I was a kid, but they grew up and married during the Depression, when food was hard to come by unless you worked hard for it. And if I could find a way to get the excess food to the people who really need it, I’d be glad to do so, but it’s not possible right now.
As far as eating at restaurants, if I’m with someone we’ll order one meal and one dessert, or similar, and split them. Otherwise I’ll get a box or carton for what I don’t eat. It’s just a matter of discipline and thinking about the “problem”, not just accepting it.
Since I have no use for any drink, it still costs me more to order a meal than individual items. A sandwich and a small fry is less than a “meal,” so that’s what I order (when I don’t order just the sandwich).
I usually do the frozen dinner for lunch time at work. Aside from the fact that they tend to be rather high in salt content the portion sizes are generally more reasonable — Hungary Man dinners aside. Healthy Choice keeps their sodium chloride content to reasonable levels.The South Beach diet frozen dinners are actually fairly good as far as being healthy and quick. They generally average about 25g of protein and are very low on carbs. Although a slice of whole grain bread to go along with it is not a bad idea. People that have one slice of whole grain bread a day generally lose more weight on a diet plan that those that don’t. If you can find a bread that isn’t loaded down with high fructose corn syrup you’d probably even be able to have 2 slices.
