At Least It’s Not Hip Hop

The producers of the Superbowl half time show have obviously confused me with a Tom Petty fan. Let’s just hope there are no wardrobe malfunctions.

Though I do have to confess that, while this is the first time I’ve actually seen Justin Timberlake, and prior to tonight would not have recognized him, I was most gratified to see him so physically abused in that commercial.

[After-game update]

Well, some publisher made a bad bet:

19-0: The Historic Championship Season of New England’s Unbeatable Patriots (Paperback)

Guess they weren’t as “unbeatable” as they thought. Given that the putative author was “Boston Globe,” presumably they were going to publish as well.

As Nelson Muntz would say, “Ha ha.”

But, you have to say, it was a hell of a game. And being a Wolverine, I did want Brady to pull it out at the end, but it was a tough call. It’s too bad that only one team could win. And of course, there were Michigan players on both sides of the ball. The Giants wouldn’t have won without wide receivers Plaxico Burress (a Spartan), who caught the winning touchdown, and Amani Toomer (a record-holding Wolverine, though slightly before Brady’s time).

  1. The producers of the Superbowl half time show have obviously confused me with a Tom Petty fan.

Hunh – it’s the first Super Bowl half-time show in a long time that I liked. No funky half-assed medleys … just a set of songs by a solid group of musicians.

Plus .. I can imagine that Tom Petty would be a guy who would enjoy sitting down in a bar and sharing a pitcher of beer and could be one of the guys.

I can’t say the same of Prince, Mick Jagger, Janet Jackson ..

  2. So just before kickoff, a cousin announces, “Hey, I can’t wait to see some bare tit-ty at halftime.” We had to remind him it was Tom Petty, and at Tom’s age, no wanted to see him bare chested (agree with Brian, it was a good halftime).

Sadly, my wife’s cousin wasn’t left disappointed, because in the 4th quarter we got the Amp commercial.

Congratulations to the Manning family. I’m not a fan of either team, but I do thinks the Giants played a better game and deserved the well earned win.

  3. I said the same thing “At Least It’s Not Hip Hop” when Doritos announced the winner of their Record-Deal competition. A solo male, a solo female and a trio of [C]Rap “Musicians” were the finalists.
Thankfully, the female won. Nice voice and guess what: one can listen to her and want to punch a wall!
..and as for Petty: Good ole boy from my home state. Nice to see his wardrobe functioned as it should.

  4. The halftime show was less than memorable, but like someone mentioned before, a solid playing by a solid group, though I would have liked at least one song from their later album.

Hats off to the Giant’s D-fense. Not only did they play an exceptional game, the Patriots O-line had an off game. Still, probably one of the best Superbowl games in many years. The only person on the Pats side I truly feel for is Junior Seau. He gives more in a game than is humanly possible.

How long before we get the Manning commercial with the two brothers comparing rings and then frowning at their dad, who then says, “What?”

  5. Tom Petty? Must be some newfangled minstrel or something!

Why these newfangled punk rockers are just too much for your midwestern sensabilities!

To quote Chris Elliot: “Those damn kids and their Neil Sadaka records!”

Rand, you are slipping into Monty Burns land here.

It has nothing to do with my age (or the Midwest). I just quit listening to most popular music back when I was in college.
