Well, That’s…Different

[Update a few minutes later[

Thoughts from Bob Zimmerman.

[Tuesday update]

Peter Hague wishes him luck, but fears that he won’t be able to shift the agency trajectory.

    1. You’ll have to ask him. But Trump wouldn’t have announced it if Jared had refused privately as I’m sure he had the opportunity to do so had he not wanted the nomination…

  1. It will be interesting to see Tory Bruno’s reaction, but he hasn’t Tweeted in a week.

I think Starliner and Orion are going to have to put on quite a dog and pony show for Jared if they hope to continue.

No problem. Unite the two programs. Starliner to put astronauts into orbit and Orion to return them from orbit with only a single EVA needed… Assuming the magical, mystery fix to Orion’s heat-shield works… All the old-space folks will be very happy.

    2. They’ll put on a show, but it may not be the show they wanted to perform.

Back in June, Rand made this post: Better late than never

My response is still there. Sometimes never is not a bad thing. I’d say my comment held up for Starliner’s delayed mission.

  2. Great choice. He already has his own space program that has earned a lot of good will that will be hard for Democrats to attack.

    1. I find it interesting of all the old films that get mentioned from time to time; few people mention “The Firm”. Except now, you don’t get an actual honeypot, as they’ll just use any woman that can claim to have known you in the past and offer her price to say whatever about what you did to her some decades before.

      1. “….and offer her price to say whatever about what you did to her some decades before.”

…at some time I can’t specify, in some place I can’t remember, with witnesses who will corroborate what I’m saying but whom I cannot produce.

  3. What is the biggest market in space?
It seems it’s Starlink and it’s competitors.
Starlink has about 4 million subscribers, and it’s going to have around 4 billion subscribers. But I wouldn’t rule out “it’s competitors” which have not come close to Starlink, yet.
So, likewise what will be the biggest markets in space or related to “space”. Such as a lunar economy, Mars settlements, mining space rocks, etc.
And etc can also include suborbital travel, and perhaps more weirdly ocean settlements.
I think Mars settlements are related to ocean settlements.
Some in past have argued that ocean settlements would be cheaper than Mars settlements {as if it was argument opposed to having Mars settlements} but I think Mars settlements will start ocean settlements, because Mars settlements are probably going to need to launch rockets to Mars from the ocean. But this also applies to sub-orbital travel, to have suborbital travel, one will also “need” to launch suborbital rockets from the ocean.
One could also say having a global internet, will “help” in having ocean settlement.
And I think a needed element of having ocean settlements is having very cheap floating breakwater [less than 1 ton of material per 1 meter- or 1000 tons of metal per km].
But I think one biggest markets in space will electrical power generation, and will be Venus orbit.
And it seems Mars exploration will lead to Venus orbit use- because using Venus orbit reduces the 2.1 year window between Earth and Mars.
