Explain to the cartels that they need to make money off something other than illegals and fentanyl. Finish the wall and using our submarine force if necessary for the latter. You know, accidents happen at sea all the time…
Let’s encourage the cartels to get involved in something legal. Like exporting fine steel to Boca Chica for use by SpaceX. Or training skilled steel and construction workers to work at the same cross-border with visas. They get good enough at it, maybe SpaceX will extend Starbase into Mexico. Hardly a stone’s throw from Boca Chica. Imagine that…
Yes, Mexico is going to Mexico, but I don’t blame them for the border when we had an agreement with them that Mr. Biden blew up on his first day in office because reasons.
As to the cartels, there is no love among the Mexican authorities for the cartels, who rise to the level of an armed insurgency, but something tells me the Mexican authorities wish the U.S. could help them out on the demand side for what the cartels are peddling.
Yeah and yeah, poverty and loss of jobs in critical economic sectors and hopelessness are driving drug use and the resulting drug addiction, but there is a streak of rebellion against authority in American culture, which my immigrant Mom explained to me was always there that was built up during the 1960s and never fully subsided. Something tells me that many view so-called casual, recreational use of drugs as we view driving 10-over the posted speed limit on major highways.
Can someone give me statistics on the balance between the economically disadvantage and the economically well off in the demand for illegal recreational drugs?
Peter Zeihan has a YouTube channel where he expresses a pretty high opinion of himself, but he said some things about outgoing Mexican President Andreas Manuel “AMLO” Lopez-Obrador. One was that AMLO listened to what Donald Trump had to say because he too was a political outsider to the Mexican Establishment and had an election stolen from him. The deal Mr. Trump negotiated was also that Mexico would enforce their southern border to stem the flow of border crossers but that the U.S. would be “hands off” and let Mexico deal with the cartels, where US involvement, especially on Mexican soil was an affront to Mexican national pride and their governmental sovereignity.
Zeihan’s claim is that Trump “got a border deal” in trade for “not going after the cartels”, which in Zeihan’s view was a Devil’s bargain. Well, under Biden, there is no more border deal and the cartels are stronger than ever?
