  1. Thanks to my grandparents, my family (me and my sisters, our kids) have a family trust that (now) owns some commercial real estate in LA, mostly in the SFV. We used to also own apartments in WLA, and luckily have sold them off.

We are now trying to sell off, at almost any price, the commercial real estate – most of which is strip malls, largely vacant and sucking money through maintenance, security and taxes.

The rest of my family thought I was crazy I left California in 2003. I think they’re crazy they’re still there now.

    1. I was speaking to a guy who moved from California to Idaho. He had a handful of single family rentals that he sold off because of how harsh the anti-landlord regulations are there combined with how hard it is to find goon tenants.

He said that even when landlords try and treat their renters well, they get hammered by the state. He had some good renters that paid their bills and didn’t break anything and kept their rent the same for several years until they moved but then he couldn’t reset the rent to market due to rent control. Landlords can either increase rent every year or not get the chance.

      1. And the commercial properties suck – we have to maintain them, despite vandalism, squatters, etc. The police will not remove anyone, insurance will not cover the damages. The only thing we get from the city are tax bills and licensing fees.

        1. I would like to lobby you to petition to have the SFV split off into its own state. ‘Cause what a great State name!!! 😀
