My take remains that artists couldn’t compete with photography directly. So impressionism and subsequent art styles became about making art in a way that couldn’t be duplicated by photography.
And while a lot of terrible art has since been created, I think it has been for the better. When technology obsoletes your business model, you don’t keep making poor quality photographs or buggy whips. Impressionism and subsequent art styles became about keeping older art technologies relevant in the face of the new.
I think there’s a lesson here for us as we face technology capable of surpassing the human mind in a variety of ways (and which already has in narrow fields like numerical computation).
