I opposed the creation of that department at the time. It has done nothing since to change my mind.

In the US we have two parties: the Stupid Party and the Evil Party. Every now and then both parties work together to pass a bill that’s both stupid AND evil. They call this “bipartisanship”.
This is how we got DHS.
…at least they got our fair share….
Maybe I am being extra cynical after the corruption of the last decade or so but this situation could exist so that certain people can take advantage for nefarious reasons. At the very least, people will capitalize on inadvertent happenings.
When the Department of Homeland (In-)Security was being touted my first thought was incredulity: ‘Why would adding an additional layer of bureaucrats on top of the existing federal bureaucracies change anything?’
Other than adding a tier of GS-14+ salaries and the salaries of all their flunkies…
