Memories of a Charlie Brown Christmas, from Caitlin Flanagan.
This, like the reading from Genesis by the Apollo 8 crew, seems like something that couldn’t happen today.

Great article. ‘The Atlantic’ still manages to surprise me from time to time. Last year I wondered how much longer the original presentation would be available in its original form so I bought the DVD, and our family watched it again just last night. The DVD came with a “making of” feature that included a lot of the detail from this article, and it included video interviews with the director and producer and some senior CBS executives. The executives were really concerned about broadcasting anything that included a character reading Bible verses, and due to tight production schedules and the insistence of Charles Shulz that it needed to stay in, they went with it. The letters that poured in after the broadcast were universally so positive, producer Fred Silverman just grinned and said something to the effect of “we aren’t nearly as smart as we think we are”
They seem to be oblivious to the notion the …”The Haters weren’t going to watch it anyway.”

Another entry in the “couldn’t happen today” as far as being aired:
