I believe a similar phenomenon can be discerned in tree rings if you heat the wood hot enough.
The fucking Millikan oil drop electron charge experiment. The smallest oil drop I could see through the piece-of-crap microscope were too fucking large and had a minimum of fifty or so electrons. Millikan must have had normal vision instead of my alkali-scarred corneas and underpowered microscope.
