As soon as Obama was elected, SNL and late-night hosts had to stop making jokes about the President. Network comedy never recovered, and quite quickly it came to mean “ignorantly and hatefully mocking Republicans.”
Comedy has certainly turned more malicious than humorous.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Sarah Palin got gang raped by a bunch of black dudes? I don’t get the joke in that but it was said by a comedian, a progressive feminist female comedian.
Which one of the hosts said they couldn’t make fun of Biden because it would harm implementing policies they wanted?
Storytelling is so powerful because people like stories. They like suspending disbelief. They like living in the story they create. How many people are aware of the motivations of the content they consume? Bias is easy enough to spot but storytelling is harder.
Stephen Colbert became a cancer that metastasized and killed the industry. Witticism is Not Humor. You only need to compare Gary Trudeau’s Doonesbury with Charles M. Schultz’s Peanuts to see the vast difference. Charles M. Schultz could be “funny” without intentionally trying to hurt someone and also make a philosophical statement at the same time.
I’d rather call them the Unflushables, after the floaters that won’t go down the toilet drain.
