Latest Spam Phone Calls

OK, they’re not really spam, because they ask, “Is Rand Simberg there?” But that’s all they do, despite a clear machine request to leave a message. They’ve come from three or four different numbers. One of them asks repeatedly, “Is Rand Simberg there?” for over a minute (it’s my business line, so it just says “This is Interglobal Media [my corporation], please leave a message.”). I can’t help but believe, despite (or because of) the fact that they are looking for me, that these are people with whom I have no interest in talking. If they were legitimate, they’d leave a damn message what it’s about and leave a call-back number.

BTW, yes, posting has been light, because I’ve been very busy. Fortunately, in a potentially highly lucrative way.

  1. I got my best spam EVER last week. Apparently, the Illuminati are recruiting, and I’ve come to their attention. Half a mil in cash sounds good, but I’m not sure why they think a $30K car is an incentive these days; perhaps they’ve been out of touch for a while.

I think I’m gonna hold off for a while, see if the Freemasons or The Jews come up with a better offer. I’m assuming there’s a racial requirement for the Lizard People, but I’m willing to learn.

  2. Rand, DON’T ANSWER their question! It’s a well-known scam.

They want you to say the word “Yes” — they’ll record it and splice it in as the response to some kind of “Do you authorize this?” question. If they know your your name and phone number, they have other information about you, and they’ll use it to your detriment.

It’s a variation of the “Can you hear me?” scam.

    1. Note that the Wikipedia article points out that there don’t appear to be any confirmed reports of anyone actually being scammed by this, in spite of the widespread reporting.

  3. Off topic, but I just saw a vaccine post at Gab and it included this paragraph.

Over the weekend I received a direct message from a NASA engineer who informed me that “almost all the engineers here have all banded together and are forcing NASA admin to fire them (both vaccinated and unvaccinated alike). NASA is on a hiring freeze, so firing all these folks would essentially kill the Artemis mission.”

Hopefully it is something cool and not day trading.

        1. Of course. If you enter a trade, and then get immediately stopped out, because you’re not an idiot, and had a safety stop because you manage your risk, but it went the wrong way, it’s a round trip in a day. But it wasn’t the desired outcome.

I’m a swing trader. I expect to get out of a position days or weeks later, not intraday. If an underlying on the option explodes, or implodes, and I’m suddenly up by a lot intraday, and I move the stop up or down to lock in the profit, and I get stopped out, then that’s cool, but that hardly ever happens.

  5. Haven’t gotten one of those in a while, when they asked whatever question it was to solicit a “yes” from me I’d put the phone next to my drums & start playing & I can play very loud 🙂
