They is not such thing as ‘cancel’ in our on-line culture. The closest you get may be de-scored on Google. But the wise don’t rely on Google either. In fact there is probably a budding business to be had on the Wayback machine equivalent for Google search. A search site that specializes in de-scored Google sites. But as far as actual cancelling comes, there is just regurgitation. Like the works of Charles Schultz, the old material just cycles endlessly regardless even of the life modality of the author.
Today’s cancelled are actually just cast upon the Internet waters, to flow across the stream to maybe eventually pool again in some out of the way eddy where the water runs slow but deep.
The other buzz-verb of the day ‘de-platforming’ is also quite futile. It’s the equivalent of roping off the state park area reserved for fishing and allowing no one to cast from its shore. But the savvy know to just move further up stream past the park boundary and cast their baited line into the Internet stream from an overhanging tree. The digital equivalent to Mr. H. Finn or maybe Blackbeard.
Wandering the wastes, excommunicated from society, but technically still alive until you can’t pay your bills, which is tough to do since you have been cut off from physical banks and online payment processors.
It reminds me of people who say they will just go live in a van or buy some land and then ignore everything. They might ignore what is going on but they wont be ignored. We are in a contest between people who want to be left alone and people who want to control every aspect of your life. By default, one group doesn’t want to get involved and the other is highly motivated to get involved.
It is interesting to note two things I personally am aware of in the era of COVID Panic, Cancel Culture and Blue Marxism:
1) Deceased friends and teachers whose Facebook pages still exist.
2) A young couple I know who are this very day living out of the back of a van, destinations yet unknown. They allow me to track their travels via Instagram.
I suppose if the posthumous friend were to blatantly post something explicitly racist on their wall, like using the N word, only then would their account get taken down?
Looks like Powr Glutes’ employer decided it wasn’t getting much value from his work, and he was part of the layoff.
It’s hard to have any sympathy for the Gay Gynecologist, since he is someone who did so much to get us to this point.
^^
The flip side is, when making people play by their own rules and suffer as they have made others suffer, there also has to be a way out. Progressive Marxism doesn’t allow for forgiveness, any respite is only temporary. Forgiveness is a big part of Western Civilization but forgiveness should be for those who demonstrate recognition of their errors.
There are a number of comics that were on the leading edge of cancel culture who are now against it but have they changed or are they just upset they were targets? Tough to say but a path out must be allowed.
There is even hope for people like Jonah Goldberg.
I may have the wrong man, but wasn’t Andrew Sullivan a co-host on Transterrestrial Musings many, many years ago? Sam Dinkin was the other? Didn’t last very long, whoever they were, maybe a year or so.
No, that was Andrew Case.
Andrew Sullivan along with the late Steven Den Beste, Charles Johnson, who appears to have become brain dead, and the Blogfather himself, Glenn Reynolds were the “Four Horsemen of the Ablogcalypse” advocating for a vigorous military response to the 9-11 attacks.
Having supported the War on Terror and in turn the Iraq War, Mr. Sullivan turned his back on Mr. Bush for not supporting gay marriage or some such beef. As for supporting gay marriage (not that there is anything wrong with that!), to dismiss all the high-stakes matters he supported Mr. Bush for on this one issue seemed at the time rather petty.
I guess after the 2016 Republican primary in South Carolina, the Conservative/Libertarian coalition memory holed support for the GWOT and the Iraq War, but still, Andrew Sullivan’s support (along with that of the late Christopher Hitchens) was coalition-building.
After chronicling the terror war against Israel in the aftermath of Mr. Arafat turning his back on the Oslo Agreements, and having taken the lead in showing graphical evidence of the Killian Texas Air National Guard Memo as being as authentic as the Clifford Irving Hitler Diaries — see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killian_documents_controversy — Charles Johnson alienated his readers by starting to find right-wing neo-Nazi skinhead terrorists under every bed.
Thinking that Glenn Reynolds was the only one left standing among the Four Horsemen, it is heartening to welcome Andrew Sullivan back to the land of his Blogfather, even if he had left for a foreign land and expended his inheritance on riotous blogging. Much as I want to resent killing the fatted calf for a grand feast on his return, I shall resist the impulse. Welcome back, Andrew!
Amazing that after he is being victimized by the Socialist Democrats he is still voting for Biden. If he thinks it’s bad now wait until the crazies are running the Congress and Executive Branch…
It’s part of that Statist Stockholm Syndrome, wherein groups who have historically the biggest victims of statism (Women, Gays, Jews, Blacks, writers and artists) are almost always the most loyal spear carriers for Der Staat,
With the screen door hitting Andrew Sullivan swiftly on the ass, I finally took the time to read his diatribe. He rails against his oppressors at the Times, yet presses forward in his naive attempt to prove that his liberalism is the virtue that will remove the stain of Trump from the American visage. I cannot help but recall Rita Mae Brown’s definition of insanity. But perhaps naivete doesn’t quite begin to describe the blindness of Sullivan to the fact that his virtuous liberalism has succumbed to the disease of social justice ‘wokedness’. He’s quick to point out the excesses of the Cultural Revolution acting on the behalf of Maoist elites without conceding the idea that the elites of our time will surely manipulate a Biden victory to suit the remake of liberal idealism. It won’t be satisfied with the simpleton pulling down the blasphemous statue when the real revolution can be coerced via compulsory statute. For Sullivan the blinders of his 20’s are on too tightly. He can hear the whip but knows not which way to run.
Correction: New York Magazine and Vox Media not the Times.
