What IT company of real value has come out of Silicon Valley in the last twenty years?
I’m sure there are some examples, but nothing really springs to mind. About all I can think of that they’ve been doing is moving physical things online (e.g. using Paypal instead of swiping your credit card) or selling advertising (Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc).
I doubt anyone will miss the next big ‘sure we lose money on every sale but we just have to survive until the IPO’ fake tech company.
Uber, Lyft, AirBnB, are the three that come to mind. All add value, though nothing approaching their market caps.
It is hard to have rando encounters online when people silo themselves and you can be excommunicated from society for not being Marxist enough.
I took a trip to Boston in 2015, to meet with Lincoln Labs (I was a DARPA PM at the time). One thing I learned is that Boston had at that time deliberately set up an environment much like Silicon Valley. It was intended to merge the high-tech capabilities of MIT students with the more advanced thinkers in the East Coast investment community. I toured a lot of the area, and was impressed with the scale of the ecosystem.

I wonder if it is now suffering the same fate…
