They did in 2008-2009. That’s where the Tea Party came from.

Republicans must not betray their base?
How about that blogs like this one and others in 2008-2009 got all Libertarian-y and government spending austerity oriented and lost the Republicans their voters?
With language about “iron rice bowls” and “self-licking ice cream cones” to describe public employees at all levels of government, who yes, were the primary beneficiaries of the ARRA (The Stimulus that kept state governments afloat), when having a public employee like a school teacher in the family was the only thing keeping many families in rural communities afloat?
With the reintroduction of Ayn Rand’s “moochers and looters” to describe anyone receiving government funds, where her Russian-experience inversion of Stalin’s “saboteurs and wreckers” appeared to be lost on many in the Right wing blogosphere.
And all of the never-Trump hate emanating from blogs such as this because Mr. Trump never jumped on the iron-rice-bowl self-licking-ice-cream anti-moocher and looter rhetoric. The support for Mr. Trump came from extremist alt-right blogs under which a person doesn’t want to comment under their real name, not here, but the Paleos and alt-Righters and anti-Political Correctness crowd got it right that the real battle wasn’t over starving out prison guards (a certain Midwestern governor from the anti-moochers and looters faction was going to staff prisons with the National Guard) and public hospital nurses.
The real battle was over, yes, introducing a measure of protectionism and mercantilism while at the same time slashing regulations to bring back working-class jobs, appointing judges who interpreted the laws-on-the-books rather than making stuff up, and going full-bore on hydrocarbon fuels to power prosperity. Yeah, the House of Representatives was lost in ’18 be cause the True Blue Libertarians has the vapors about “Trumps Tariffs” stalling the stock market, and did that turn out for ya?
Our esteemed host graciously providing this i-soap box only reluctantly, grudgingly, reservedly came into the pro-Trump camp.
And what now is the problem? Mr. Trump’s immediate, proactive 2020 Stimulus measure, the 2008 Bailout and 2009 ARRA wrapped in one. Did he make too many concessions to Speaker Pelosi? Are people going to start talking once more about those rice bowls and ice cream (never got the part about the rice bowls — a bowl of rice represents a starch-based food staple of a starvation-preventing food ration?).
