I don’t fly often enough to pursue a cost effective way to deal with this. If I want in-flight WiFi I typically pay the ransom for the flight.
With an iPhone or iPad it is possible to store a movie on the device at home before I leave. I’m sure others have their favorite solutions. If I ever do end up flying more I will look into it.
On American, you can use the wifi for free to watch movies on board. You only have to pay if you want Internet.
StarLink and its competitors should be able to resolve this rather quickly. Same for cruise ships.
