I was alive then, a few months after Apollo 11, but I’d never heard the full story of what had happened there; I only knew that there was another music festival, like Woodstock.

In the hierarchy of control, music is above politics. The hells angels clubbing of the crowd in a Dionysian frenzy neatly sums up the 60’s:

I read this recently in E M Jones: Dionysus Rising. Flabbergasted.
I was twenty and while I listened to the same rock as everyone else my age, didn’t revere it the way some of my idiot friends did. I remember hearing something about problems at Altamont, maybe reading some article by Hunter Thompson? I’d read his “Hell’s Angels” book when I was I Junior High, along with some nonsense by Ken Kesey. I remember thinking I was getting more and better sex from the non-drug addled girls I knew than what was reported about the ones in the books. Plus these guys seemed in love with the word “furze” (meaning women’s pubic hair, which I guess has gone extinct in the half century since…).
I feel for the woman in the crochet. She not only saw the murder but was around as he was covered in a sheet and hauled out by helicopter. According to the films. Lucky she wasn’t killed or injured in the melee.
