I still hope SpaceX gets there first because only Elon would name the ship something silly like “The Importance of Being Ernest”.
That’s great but first he needs to get his rocket flying.
There is one problem with that theory, he’s not listed as a speaker and Thursday is the conference warp up, an odd time for such an announcement.
Oh, don’t I truly ans sincerely wish the conference would, “warp up.” yes indeed, I would truly love to see that.
It seems that all Bezos has to do, is build the lander which can put 10,000 lb payload on the Moon.
And money to do this is not a problem.
NASA might pay him to develop the lander, but for the billionaire, such payment is not even needed.
Wiki:
“A BE-3U LOX/Hydrogen rocket engine will be used to place the lander on a trans-lunar injection trajectory and to begin to decelerate the vehicle for its lunar surface landing.”
This sounds the second or third stage rocket is going get the lander to the Moon and might get lander, say, 1/2 way to lunar surface.
Or from low lunar orbit, it require about 1600 m/s to land on lunar surface. And rocket stage could allow the lander to use less than 1600 m/s to land on the lunar surface.
And it seems if the 10,000 lbs of payload is rocket fuel, then have lander which can leave the lunar surface.
Bezos doesn’t have to build a lander because a team thinks they’ve located Snoopy, the Apollo 10 lunar module, still in lunar orbit.
So all Bezos needs to do is refuel it, replenish the batteries, oxygen and CO2 scrubbers, and he’s good to go!
Or he could try to retrieve it and sell it on Amazon, or use it as a nice lobby decoration.
Jeff Bezos (who?) can hint and announce all he wants. Until he actually starts flying an orbital rocket, it’s all just words.
I think he’s given way more allowance because he can afford to hire anyone out there who has experience flying rockets. Heck, he can afford to hire all of them.
