All it takes to be a “White Nationalist” these days is believe in the continued existence of White people. The Cathedral, for rhetorical/smear purposes, has set the bar quite low without consideration for the consequences.
The usual morons have been declaring that Trump is a “white nationalist” because he has praised nationalism while being white. I haven’t seen them accusing Bernie of being a national socialist, even though he’s called himself a “nationalist.”
This isn’t exactly true. Diversity is supposed to lead to better outcomes. I don’t know how they measure that in academia other than by counting people. Professors and administrators haven’t exactly been welcoming to methods of assessing their skills. In the business world, they would look at profits or case studies of successful projects. It is all very hard to quantify but there are some studies that people like to link.
There is also the Social Justice aspect of righting perceived or real historical wrongs. Part of this is very laudable, helping groups overcome history. But part of it is horrific, punishing groups deemed responsible for history. There is a common sentiment among the left, an undercurrent of now its their turn to suffer.
The counter argument from the right is that forced diversity doesn’t necessarily lead to better outcomes and that meritocracy will inevitably lead to diversity, although uneven diversity as individuals choose to pursue their desires.
The problem is that the left is not self aware enough, or unable to disassociate themselves, to see how their professed goals are not solving the problems they want solved. There is the desire for control rather than just letting things unfold. They are also incapable of understanding other perspectives on how to solve problems because they are so caught up in dehumanizing and stereotyping people who are different than them.
How bout instead of this one group of people are OK. Everybody is OK. Period.
Americans not considered white at various times in American history: German-Americans, Greek-Americans, Irish-Americans, Italian-Americans, Jewish-Americans, Slavic-Americans, Armenian-Americans, Finnish- Americans, etc.
On the other hand, the census bureau has, at times, designated people from India as white. And the US government has revoked citizenship from naturalized Americans born in India because they were officially white and then later were deemed not officially white.
The whole concept of “white” in America is not ok. Have a look at this:
https://digitalcommons.law.yale.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=7941&context=ylj
Now, it is a law article, but an unusual one and it starts out using some liberal arts ideas that the typical engineer might not feel comfortable with. Just skip all that, and flip through it until you get the part where various Supreme Court cases are cited. You’ll see a such a wealth of court cases which demonstrate over and over again that “white” has nothing to do with skin color or national origin or ethnicity or anthropology or any criteria that makes any sense at all if you aren’t determined to be an asshole. It isn’t ok. Find something else to proclaim is “ok”.
Confession: I originally bounced off the article because I didn’t realize that the weird beginning was just a very long quote from “Moby Dick”.
Anticipated response: But I, “Wodun”, am ok and I’m white.
My reply: Sure, Wodun, you’re ok. Are you white? Why self-identify as “white”? What exactly does that do for you? Are you proud that your ancestors came from a large swath of Europe? Great. Europe is a complex place with a hell of a lot to be proud of. But all that just doesn’t have very much to do with the exclusionary American concept of “white”.
Or are you proud of your family’s long history in America? Great! Be proud of being an American. I don’t see why someone would proudly self-identify as “white” given that the category only gets used for racist reasons. Find something else to be proud of, like being Finnish-American or American or pan-European-American or just being good at the banjo or whatever.
Bob, what are you proud of?
I do not take pride in my ancestry. It’s irrational to take pride in (or feel shame for) something over which one has no control.
That sure is a lot of verbiage to refute something no one here is saying.
I don’t see why someone would proudly self-identify as “white” given that the category only gets used for racist reasons.
Ah, that’s why it’s actually not OK to be white. It’s OK to proudly self-identify as black, brown, jewish, muslim, whatever, because those are never used for racist reasons. Only white is racist.
Umm… well… with respect to the exclusionary American concept of “white” anyway. So it’s only not OK to be white in America I guess.
Clear as mud Bob, thanks.
Great trolling of the SJWs.
No shit.
I intentionally said nothing about using other racial categories like “black” or “yellow” or whatever. For racial categories, I only chimed in how the concept of “white” is used.
If I say “it is not ok to eat broken glass”, I’m not implying that it is ONLY not ok to eat broken glass. There might be other things you also shouldn’t eat.
I did however, suggest that it is ok to be proud of being a Finn, or being Polish, or other ethnic groups based on nationality, even though, as you seem to agree, people do sometimes use national categories like “Finn” for racist reasons. The good news is that people find ways to use “Finn” and “Polish”.
What’s unique about “white” is that in America, people *only* use it for racist reasons. How and why other racial categories, like “Black” get used is complicated and I figured I was being complicated enough by asking you to at least flip through a long scholarly article published in a law journal. I’d be happy to get into it though, if I thought it was going to be a pleasant intellectual conversation.
What’s unique about “white” is that in America, people *only* use it for racist reasons.
You’re right Bob, if the census bureau didn’t use “Caucasian” it would be proof they were just determined to be an asshole.
And all those job application forms from companies that haven’t got with the program and still use “white”, well, they’ll get weeded out eventually.
We have to know the numbers in order to identify the enemy, right Bob?
Upon reflection I’ve come up with a proposal that I think everyone here can agree with. Henceforth all census forms shall include the following statement:
For those who are triggered at the thought that when selecting “Caucasian” under the “Race and Ethnicity” section that someone, somewhere, at some time will conclude you were inadequately ashamed, you may select the “Other” category. You may also choose to submit a personal “statement” attesting to your shame and including any evidence in support of your true minority standing. However, to guarantee your indemnification from prosecution by any current or future Department of Homeland ThoughtCrime Investigation (DHTI), you should consider using the bureau’s prepared form, which can be downloaded from our website.
That is an outright falsehood. But then again you are a Democrat and might be making a judgement based on the people you associate with.
Oh BS.
You didn’t include other skin colors ’cause that cuts against your point and makes you look racist. If you really wanted to be inclusive in dealing with skin color, racial, and ethnic identity, you would have just lumped them all together to make your point rather than singling out white people.
Saying its racist for anyone to identify as white, black, brown, or whatever is racist is a very different point than what you were making and if you actually intended to make that point you would have done so rather than going down some anti-white rabbit hole.
I am neither proud nor ashamed of my ethnicity. I am an American.
Yeah, like being attacked for being white, which is why you suggest identifying as something else.
Being white is just shorthand for your appearance, it doesn’t say anything about your family history or European lineage. Most white people are mutts and often include a background from countries that bitterly fought each other for hundreds of years. But in America, we give up those old associations and animosities. Why would you identify as Finnish-American when you should just call yourself American? How do you pick out which part of your mixed heritage to claim as identity?
What Democrats don’t realize is that identity politics atomizes Americans into ethnic subgroups and divides the country. Then Democrats dehumanize these subgroups as needed for political power. If you ever talked to one of the few white nationalists that exist, their primary motivation is the racist way Democrats treat white people. Why wouldn’t white people identify as a ethnic block when Democrats want everyone to identify as an ethnic block, just like you suggested?
Bob-1
You anti-Whites must be completely removed from power, permanently and forever. If it takes a military coup to abolish all elections that allow people like Bob-1 to vote, then so be it.
In order for people like Bob-1 to abolish White people, they will have to abolish the Russian people.
We all know what that means…

For disclosure, I’m Asian.
Bob-1, you might not realize this but often times white and Caucasian are used like synonyms but white is a reference to primarily skin color. Caucasians actually come in a range of skin colors. Indians, Egyptians, Hispanics, and Middle Easterners are sometimes* considered Caucasians. This doesn’t fit into Democrats narrow views of race and ethnicity.
* Sometimes because there are populations in these groups that don’t fit the criteria because they are from areas with lots of population movements over time.
It is ok to be white or any other ethnicity. The only people who think its not OK are racists.
The last sentence of paragraph 3 should have read “The good news is that people find ways to use “Finn” and “Polish” for non-racist reasons too.”
It is healthy to have some interest in your family history. Knowing how your family got to this country is a great story. But taking it to the degree that you identify as some other nationality rather than American is not healthy. As Americans, we don’t hold onto allegiances of heritage.
The concept of the melting pot is much better than the salad bowl.
Identifying as an American is the only way to bring everyone together as one people. It is why Democrats are so afraid of Trump calling himself a nationalist. Democrats don’t want people identifying as Americans rather than some racial or ethnic subgroup.
Whenever the topic of race or whiteness comes up, it is always illuminating to notice that the two groups who think the same way on race are Democrats and white supremacists.
I saw people trumpeting the number of “firsts” in this past election. To do this, the democrats first looked at the color of people’s skin, their gender, or their sexual orientation; and then highlighted these differences in order to call them firsts. It’s been 50 years since we lost MLK Jr., and democrats are still judging, discriminating, and segregating people based on superficial traits.
Unless you are a Republican, then it doesn’t count as a first and the media wont beat their chest over it.
