One of the reasons that Rerun (who, very sadly for us, we’re going to have to put down today or tomorrow to end her suffering) has been such a great cat is her extroversion and agreeableness.

Sorry for your loss. My wife and I have had to put down two of our purring friends over the last few years. It was the right thing to do to end their suffering, but it is never easy.
Very sorry to hear. Cats are strange little creatures, but (at least for me) they appeal to different senses in us than dogs. Hard to not like a purring, contented cat or one caught in a moment of uniquely feline goofiness.
There is no equivalent to Kipling’s poem ‘The Power of the Dog’, but there might ought to be.
Sorry to hear that Rand.
I never had cats when I was growing up, because my dad hated them. I never did understand why.
When I was 42, I was living in an apartment and befriended my neighbor’s cat. “Befriended” is an understatement. I have never bonded with an animal like that in my life, and it was clearly mutual.
To make a long story short, I started cat-sitting Chloe on weekends when my neighbor went away. My neighbor was not the most responsible pet owner, and eventually Chloe got pregnant. She had her litter of three kittens in my bedroom closet.
Over the next several months, I would still watch Chloe and the kittens when my neighbor was away. I watched them grow up to adulthood. Even though they were closely related and were raised together, they each had unique and distinct individual personalities. They looked alike, but they were as different from each other as night and day. I would never have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes.
I ended up adopting two of the kittens, and my neighbor eventually moved away with Chloe and the other one. Leo died suddenly of an apparent heart attack at age 7, and I lost Kira in August at 17.
I am incredibly fortunate to have had that experience with the mother and the kittens, watching them grow to adulthood.
Rand, I am sorry about the impending loss of Rerun.
I currently have five cats, having recently rescues the young pregnant mama of two kittens so I too am quite fond of cats.
Could you post a picture of Rerun perhaps?
My condolences.
I can really sympathize on the cat loss. I was determined not to have any pets, and then a very intelligent alley cat entered my life. She sort of adopted me, and eventually left me with four kittens under my kitchen table. Not long afterward she was hit by a car and killed. It was one of the worst days in my life. But I still have two of her offspring, and they continue to bring joy into my life.
I have often thought there is a melancholy look in the eyes of many cats, and that it’s because they know on some level they will be with us only for a relatively short time.
Or, because you are neither feeding or petting them right now.
