Not sure it’s been that long, but it’s certainly been decades.
I think the cycler makes sense and the other route makes sense as well. It’s kinda like the difference between an airplane and a ship. Bulk cargo might be moved on the cycler.
You need two transfers to/from a cycler which probably requires human labor. The transfer ships will need high acceleration and lowest possible mass. The cycler itself could be huge though.
Probably wouldn’t smell any worse than the ISS.
They don’t use excrement for radiation shielding on the ISS.
