Bob Zubrin thinks we need one. I haven’t read the whole thing, but I generally agree. (Yes, I know it’s a few months old, but I just ran across it, and not much has changed.)

Zubrin’s heart is in the right place but a third party with significant share just insures the worst of the two remaining parties gets power.
Indeed, the way we currently do elections has horrible bugs when more than 2 major parties are in significant play. The fix would be to adopt some better means of doing elections (I like approval voting), but that’s an uphill climb.

Unless it has more vote share than the worst of the two remaining parties. That’s why the Whig party is no longer among us.
Each supports its own Malthusian antihuman collectivist ideology: for Democrats, it is ecologism, for Republicans, it is nativism.
I wish people who support open borders would just be honest and say they support it rather than demonize those who prefer current laws be enforced and measures taken to prevent illegal immigration.
When people talk about being American and the benefits of traditional American ideology in the context of immigration, it isn’t based on race, ethnicity, or country of origin but rather people who come to the USA assimilating into our culture. Is there an identity play here? Sure, but identifying as an American not a tribal ethnic block.
This identity is appealing to people of all races and ethnicities, which Zubrin should know if he spent any time interacting with the minorities that supported Trump.
Unrestricted open borders without assimilation leads to the very tribalization Zubrin thinks is a problem.
We need parties that recognize America is its own country rather than ones who view America as all of humanity. America is a distinct country with a culture and society that differs from other countries. If we aren’t proud of our own country, how can we evangelize our way of life to push out those borders of freedom Zubrin mentions?
Also, the notion that identifying as an American means we are heading toward a dictatorship is utter nonsense.
“Unrestricted open borders without assimilation leads to the very tribalization Zubrin thinks is a problem.”
Bingo. Go back in time and prevent the passage of the 1965 immigration law, and the current mob of Democrats would have no chance of being elected.
Mass immigration, particularly from nations with no shared culture, is about importing new voters to vote against the wishes of the native people. That’s why the Democrats love it.
I would agree if they would just give up on the whole socialism thing. We do need a strong loyal opposition party.
What “socialism” thing? Liberals aren’t socialists, by definition. The socialists who call themselves “liberals,” aren’t.
Just silly. If Trump has proven anything, it’s that the Republican party is open to ideas, and the Democrats are not (As they proved when they fixed the primaries against Bernie. An idiot? Yes. But the one the Democrat base wanted.) You want a “liberal” party? Sell it. Pretty sure you would beat the “nativists” if someone would bother to actually play the game…….
Be careful what you ask for …
