Victor Davis Hanson on the nightmares versus the realities.
Trump has been about as terrible as I expected him to be, and I don’t expect he’ll change. I’m primarily happy that he’ll probably get another SCOTUS nominee. I’m still glad she lost.
[Update a while later]
Link was wrong, fixed now.
Temporary comment:
The link is to the OPEC is Dead story in TheWeek.
The link goes to the OPEC piece.
I think Trump is just a symptom and the problem is the vast disconnect between the elites of both parties and regular Americans. And by elites of both parties, I mean the Republican insiders and about half of Democrat voters who sip lattes and groan about the ignorant and racist deplorables.
I’m also happy he’ll probably get another SCOTUS nominee, if not more.
And I’m happy Keystone XL and Dakota Access are being completed.
And I’m happy people like DeVos and Pruitt are on the job.
And I’m happy sanctuary cities are getting pressured to obey the law.
And I’m happy the racist content on the White House’s website has been removed.
And I’m happy common sense has been re-instated regarding FHA down payment and mortgage insurance requirements.
And I’m happy illegal immigration is way down.
And I’m happy that federal attacks on the second amendment won’t be happening for at least the next four years.
But what I’m most happy about is that if Michael Mann’s lawsuit manages to get appealed all the way to the supreme court, the result will be a ruling that means when someone says someone’s the Jerry Sandusky of climate science, anyone who doesn’t like it will be forced to think twice about suing them.
“I’m also happy he’ll probably get another SCOTUS nominee, if not more.”
Yuppers..maybe two…assume you think Kennedy is the next one; don’t think Ruth Bader Ginsburg will last all 4 years either.
And don’t forget:
“President Trump has more than 120 federal judicial spots to fill”

“And I’m happy Keystone XL and Dakota Access are being completed.”
Yuppers again pretty happy about his reversing Obama’s inept decision to cancel the Keystone pipeline
“And I’m happy sanctuary cities are getting pressured to obey the law. And I’m happy illegal immigration is way down.”
Yes…what a concept; actually enforcing the law rather than turning a half blind eye.
“And I’m happy that federal attacks on the second amendment won’t be happening for at least the next four years.”
Again, yes sir; which makes the judicial appointments he makes (& not just SCOTUS see above) that much more important. Possibly his most important legacy if he appoints at least 2 (possibly three) SCOTUS judges and dozens of other lower court justices during his 1st term. I also hope they get national reciprocity passed also; though I have some trepidation about it. I knew Trump would have a savage uphill battle to get his things (like the wall) done; so I not ready to give up on him yet.
He’s not done yet:
Trump Administration Wants to Start Process of Renegotiating NAFTA
“The Trump administration formally informed Congress Thursday of its intention to renegotiate NAFTA, the North American Free Trade agreement with Canada and Mexico that President Trump frequently attacked as a candidate, calling it “defective,” “a total disaster” and the “worst trade deal maybe ever signed anywhere.”

…can’t say I regret voting for him so far; like I said knew with the hopelessly biased media it would be a hard road. Hope he has the intestinal fortitude (or I will settle for just plain ego-drive desire to win whatever it takes). He deserves Kudos for repealing allot of those Obama executive orders; a fact that rarely gets mentioned. I think he will weather through the Russian investigation; if the can get just part of his ambitious agenda done the Republicans should remain in control of Congress greatly reducing the impeachment threat. After all the Republicans controlled both houses of Congress when they impeached Bill Clinton (after he won 2nd term) and still couldn’t get enough votes to remove him from office.

He makes a lot of quiet successes because the media won’t report on them. They always find some issue to beat him over the head with and when there isn’t one, they just make it up. Its the same thing they do to other Republicans but dialed up so high the nob came off.
Still there are people who say things like, “Only if Trump didn’t do X, the media would have been nice to him today.” Not sure how any adult could be so blind.
10 Democrat operatives with bylines attack Trump.
20 Trump doesn’t retreat like that want.
30 Operatives turn dial up a notch.
40 goto 10
This will continue until the democrats self destruct or go to overt war.
You really do need to recognize this is 2017, and use a “while” loop 😉
Tip O’Neill called Ronald Reagan “the most ignorant man who had ever occupied the White House.” It was the narrative of the time.
Narrative: a false story repeated in ‘big lie’ fashion to hide the truth.
I’m unhappy that Trump is not a great communicator. I was born in Brooklyn. English is not their native language. Nor is wonk. NYers are prone to exaggeration. They are loud and obnoxious. They are easy to misunderstand.
Even Winston Churchill was considered uncultured. He may have been the first deplorable.
History judged Reagan and Churchill pretty well.
Actions still speak louder than words. BUT DON’T EXPECT THE MEDIA TO ACTUALLY REPORT THOSE ACTIONS… other than in back page CYA if at all.
Today they make up crap and innuendo of actions that are not illegal while ignoring actual criminals that are in league with them.
Never Trumpers are worse than the enemy. They never refute the narrative but pore gas on it. They pick on the leaves and ignore the forest. They will be responsible if our country fails.
Today they make up crap and innuendo of actions that are not illegal while ignoring actual criminals that are in league with them.
Notice they never give the source material for their articles. Its always a third or fourth hand characterization of them. Even with the access hollywood tape, they didn’t give full quote or release the full tape. Instead, they make an accusation and then just refer to it in a one word shorthand insult later.
Washington Post is the worst. They write in bad faith, always twisting words into things that were not said or did not happen.
My fave is good ol’ Bob Woodward, author of Veil, the novel, um, I mean journalistic book disclosing Bob Casey’s deathbed confession, recently explained that he and his colleagues do not promulgate Fake News.
Do you also suppose Wired (The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi), was, sensationalized? Na!
WaPo is bad, but it has some pretty stiff competition for worst with the NYT.
Being a Midwesterner who once lived and worked on the New Jersey side of the great land ruled by the Port Authority, I would hardly describe anyone from Brooklyn or Queens as hard to understand or hard to listen to. Were I have said that to anyone, I would have been told, “I got your hard-to-understand . . . right here!”
It had been made known to me that I have a very strong regional accent making me hard to listen to. I have a somewhat higher pitched voice for a man, and she has a lower pitched voice for a woman, and all I need to do for my Hillary impression is talk normally. In playing back my answering machine announcement, ow, my ears!
By the way, a woman acquaintance from that time explained that she was born in New Jersey (probably sounding like Barbara Walters) and to get a teaching certificate to work in Brooklyn, she was required to take speech therapy, making her sound much like Donald Trump. So yes, if you speak as they do in New Jersey, you have a speech impediment, and you need to correct that before you mess up the kids in your classroom.
Trump makes a lot of statements that are on their surface inflammatory. At this point I’m wondering if it’s deliberate, knowing how it will make his opponents go transparently insane.
“They will be responsible if our country fails.”
Nope.
They were or may have been a reason our country was failing.
Never Trumpers are like NASA- in theory doing something.
They give appearance of doing something which makes doing anything
harder.
Anyhow it seems the end result will be the Dems will get slaughtered in next election- they have been ineffective opposition just like the Never Trumpers have been.
I have been content with Trump with the exception of his leftward tilt on climate and health care. The media put on a huge pressure campaign to bully Ivanka into confronting her father.
Also, Trump isn’t displaying his mastery over setting traps for the media. I think this is more because the media is going after underlings who are not as aware of the goals of the media.
The biggest disappointment is the media. Rather than becoming professionals who act with ethics, they have regressed into the worst form of soulless writing.
The leftward tilt on health care is in fulfillment of promises to his electoral coalition.
The leftward tilt on climate (change) is just Mr. Trump’s stream-of-consciousness hold-no-thought-to-oneself speaking style. As long as frackers frack and pipelines pipe, I am taking this as just talk.
Agree with a lot of the comments here. I am pretty content with most of what his administration has _done_. That in itself makes me trust the media less.
