This seems like too much work for me, given that I’ve never had a good cup of coffee (it’s just a matter of to what degree it tastes less awful), but here’s a guide to roasting your own.

I find it hard to believe that you live in LA and can’t get a decent cup of coffee. Sounds to me like you aren’t trying very hard…
There is no such thing as a “decent cup of coffee.” It is a myth. Coffee is the opposite of sex; even when it’s good it’s terrible. On this there can be no dispute.
It tastes fine to me with a ton of sugar in it. It’s kinda like cocoa. It doesn’t taste good unless it has heaps of sugar and possibly milk in it.
That’s like putting ketchup on a steak. What’s the point in drinking it if you can’t taste the coffee?
Well, I drink it only because I’ve read a lot of research that says it’s good for my health, despite the terrible taste and lack of any discernible effect on me. It’s purely medicinal, and it tastes that way. The biggest health benefit I’ve seen from my coffee consumption is improved dental health, because drinking the swill makes me brush my teeth more.
Just reading it was too much work for me.
You clearly didn’t have enough coffee.
Rand,
Try “Cold Brew”. You might hate it less :-). It is not as bitter. Just put a cup of coarsly ground coffee in about 4 cups of cold water and let it sit for about 12 hrs, then pour it through a filter. I just use a French press and set it up the evening before. This will make about 2-3 cups. Supposedly you can make larger batches that will keep up to two weeks, but I haven’t bothered.
Why would cold coffee be less awful than hot coffee? I hate iced tea. And I’m no fan of hot tea.
It is just the brewing that is cold. You can drink it hot or cold.
Or not.
I’m going to go with not.
Try a can of Java Monster “mean bean” flavor. If you don’t like that combo of coffee, sugar, and Brawndo electrolytes for a brain jolt first thing in the morning then I cannot help you. Agreed that most coffee and tea are just terrible.
I never need a “brain jolt,” and coffee never provides me with one.
