When I awoke in the year 3745 I could remember everything I had known before down to even the most insignificant detail, such as what I last ate before I went into suspension. Everything was as it was before…. except…. for this strange predilection for the consumption of carrots….
I awoke in the year 3457 at the end of a protracted nap. After a long healthy life with many personal and professional achievements, I had amassed a multitude of grandchildren and a large bank account. It was a good life but I wasn’t satisfied. Surely, by 3457 they would have conquered what was sure to kill me, old age.
That’s right, I didn’t have cancer, or type 4 diabetes (the kind you get from GM mosquitos). I just wanted to live longer and share life with my descendants while spending lots of money. Humans can do nearly anything so I was rather confident that they would solve the age old problem of aging.
They did, but humans can’t do everything, only nearly everything. Shortly after I was preserved with glutaraldehyde, they found something better to use. Something less toxic and without the side effects. Money is always green but apparently when you are frozen, your money isn’t as green as it was when you were room temperature.
The scientific community made amazing progress fighting aging and other things like cancer and type 5 diabetes (the kind you get from eating cloned dinosaurs) but there wasn’t much incentive to deal with glutaraldehyde poisoning.
I got exactly what I wanted and paid for, to live forever. Death may find me someday but only if I attract its attention. Which is tempting because my eyes are red like a demon and itch like a bad sunburn making it impossible to fall asleep. But at least I can rub my eyes. The burning in my lungs can not even receive that ineffective comfort. Its even worse when I am active but the asthma is so bad I don’t move around much. I tried to drink the pain away but the discomfort of swallowing is so great that I had to get a feeding tube and they wont let me put bourbon in it, and yes, it itches too. Everything is itchy.
At least I have my family. They don’t come around much though as
the wheezing is hard to put up with for any length of time and there is little to connect us through the generations. My wisdom is not even valued because now that type 5 diabetes has been cured no one has to be told of the dangers of eating cloned dinosaurs.
I got exactly what I wanted, or at least what I paid for.
We need a like button for a couple of these.
Wow – I didn’t know they couldn’t do that till now. Why were they freezing people?
To attempt to save their lives.
Makes it sound like a lot less chance than a Hail Mary pass. No chance at all.
Simpler to just freeze your name and address and hope they invent time travel and come back and get you.
Why did the Egyptians mummify their dead?
Up to now, cryonics has been a religion. If this result is confirmed, it may become a science.
Meh. My cousin Amos has a garage full of preserved rabbits. He’s got a couple squirrels and chipmunks, too.
This breakthrough was the result of a $26,000 prize.
I wonder what it will take before the NewSpace community realizes that prizes work?
Sounds like someone spent the last few decades in liquid nitrogen.
